Althemia was born blessed with mana from the god Lono which naturally made the sister deities Pele and Hi’iaka, interested in her. Growing up she spent most of her time with Hōpoe, which in turn allowed her to spend a lot of time with Hi’iaka. When the goddess Hi’iaka left to fulfill the mission given to her by Pele, she stayed behind with Hōpoe and learned the traditional Hula from her. Once forty days had passed and Hi’iaka hadn’t returned with Pele’s lover, Lohi’au, the goddess decided to take her anger out on Hi’iaka’s ‘Ohi’a lehua grove completely destroying it, and then she took her jealousy out on Hōpoe turning her to stone. Althemia was traumatized by this event, and stayed by the stone statue day in and day out. Once she got word that Hi’iaka had returned, she rushed to the volcano where Pele resided knowing the goddess would go there. When she got there she witnessed Hi’iaka kissing Lohi’au at the mouth of the volcano. Before she could even think about what she was witnessing she heard Pele scream out in anger. As the volcano erupted she feebly tried to get Hi’iaka’s comrades off of the raging volcano, but she wasn’t able to make it off. Hi’iaka was taken aback by her sacrifice, and decided to take pity on the child, and brought her spirit back to the islands. Althemia never forgave Pele for killing her in a rage of jealousy, in fact she harbors a deep grudge against her for taking her happiness away.
